Keeping Children Safe

Pool Safety As the weather gets warmer, much needed relief is often found at the swimming pool. And while providing hours of fun, it can also be a potential hazard for children (especially toddlers under the age of 5) if they are left unattended. Following a few safe and simple pool rules will help ensure kids stay safe while enjoying the water.

  • Designate someone to watch young children at all times
  • Never leave a child unattended in the pool
  • Do not assume swimming lessons means a child will be safe
  • Make sure there is a physical protective barrier surrounding the pool which is at least 4 feet high (either a fence or wall – with latching gates)
  • Do not use flotation devices in lieu of supervision
  • Learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
  • Keep rescue equipment close to the pool – shepherd’s hook or life preserver and a cell phone
  • Remove all children’s toys after use – toys in the pool tempt children to return
  • Secure pool by closing the gate or using a power safety cover
Purchase a Pool Alarm
Install a Fence or Wall
Invest in a Power Safety Cover
Learn CPR
Buy Rescue Equipment
Resurface or Repair Pool

Fun Outdoor Dining

Picnic Planning Take advantage of the warm summer weather by planning a few meals outdoors. A variety of venues can provide comfortable accommodations and scenic views. Nearby parks are an obvious choice but beaches, campgrounds, mountain areas, meadows or even the rooftop can make the experience more memorable. Remember to pack all the essentials and plan for enough ice and coolers to keep necessary food refrigerated.

Planning a Family Vacation

Start a home improvement project. As the countdown to summer begins, now is the perfect time to start planning a family vacation. Schedule a family meeting to discuss possible destinations and get everyone excited about the trip. Whether you plan to travel by car, plane or train, quality vacations are available to ensure everyone has a great time without draining their bank account.

July is Eye Injury Prevention Month

Eye Protection Eye injuries can happen anywhere and over 90% of them could be prevented if the proper safety eyewear was used. Home eye injuries occur due to household chemicals, battery acid, yard debris or sporting accidents. Work injuries account for most eye injuries due to falling or flying objects, or sparks that strike the eye. Speak with your ophthalmologist to determine what type of eyewear is best for your circumstances and start protecting your eyes.

For longer term eye care, adults over the age of 40 should have an eye exam every two to four years. Adults over the age of 60 should have an eye exam every one to two years. Maintaining regular check ups prevents long-term eye damage and ensures any problems are caught early when they are the most treatable.
