You Always Need Business Cards in The Most Unexpected Places

by Guest Author 21 November 2018 12:56

When you get your open your box of brand new business cards, the first thing you did was put them in places you knew you were going to need them. You have a tray of them on your desk, for instance, so that anyone you have a meeting with can just take a card. You probably loaded up a business card holder, and you have it as a part of your work clothes so that whenever you're on the job you always have cards close to hand. You probably keep a few of them in your briefcase, too, just in case you need them at a critical moment during a negotiation.

But what happens when you aren't expecting a business opportunity, and it shows up anyway? Well, that's why you should keep a few holdout cards on you for all occasions... just in case.

No One Ever Lost Money Living By The Boy Scout Motto

Picture this; you're out at dinner with a colleague, and the two of you are talking about a project you're working on. Maybe it's an upcoming issue of a magazine, maybe it's a blog series meant to promote a new product, or maybe it's managing a video. Whatever it is, someone nearby overhears your discussion, and approaches you. They're curious about what you're doing, and they seem interested in hearing about the products or services you offer. The problem is that you're in your casual clothes, and you left all your office stuff at home... if only you had a business card to hook this unexpected opportunity.

Always be prepared, because this happens a lot more often than anyone expects it to.

The glory of business cards is that they're small, portable, and you can bring them with you pretty much anywhere you go. So why would you leave them at home, when you might find yourself standing face-to-face with a potential client, or even a prospective collaborator in your field? There is no reason, and no excuse for it.

So today, take a stack of business cards, and make sure you keep them in a couple of places you're guaranteed to always have with you. For example:

  • Your Gym Bag: You may not have your business card holder in your sweat pants, but you should have some cards in that small, inside pocket.
  • Your Wallet: Because even if you left all your other work accouterments at home, chances are good you've got your wallet with you. Keep some cards in one of those unused slots for emergencies.
  • Your Smartphone Case: Much like your wallet, chances are good this is never very far from your person. If you've got a case with slots in it, or just some spare room, a couple of cards won't hurt.
  • Your Car: Whether you're giving someone a ride, or you just find yourself getting chatty at the drive-thru window, it's always a good idea to have a card when you're behind the wheel.

Anytime, Anywhere

No matter where you are, if you're talking to people, there's a chance you'll wish you had one of your cards with you. Whether you're out at dinner, going to a friend's house party, taking a hike, or just going to the store for some much-needed groceries, you never know who you're going to meet, or what conversations you're going to have. That's why it's always a good idea to have a handy, ready-made item specifically meant to allow people to get in touch with you once you've said your goodbyes and parted ways.

You will never regret having a couple of your cards on-hand, even if there seems to be no reason you would ever need them... because you just might
