"Leap Year"

by Shirrelle O. Shiel 26 February 2016 07:19

The Power of a Bargain...

Who would have ever thought that Leap Year was due to a battle of will, the desire to WIN! The bargain was for time vs talent and so Augustus outwitted his opponent winning the extra days...

Every four years February has an extra day added and is known as leap year.  A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days.  Leap seconds and leap years are added to our calendar in order that our clocks and calendars remain in sync with the earth and its seasons.  Every month in the Julian calendar has 30 or 31 days. Under the rein of Julius Caesar February had 30 days, July which was named after him had 31 days and August had only 29 days.  When Caesar Augustus became Emperor his ego got the best of him and he added two days to make his month of August the same as July.  So February lost out to August in the battle of the extra days.  Julius Caesar vs Pope Gregory  The Roman calendar did have 355 days with an extra 22-day month every two years until Julius Caesar became Emperor and ordered his astronomer Sosigenes to devise a better system in the 1st Century.  Sosigenes decided on a 365-day year with an extra day every four years to incorporate the extra hours, thus February 29th was born. Therefore leap years are not directly connected to leap seconds, but both are for the purpose of keeping the earth's rotations in sync without clocks and calendars.  Leap seconds are added to bring the earth's rotating into line with atomic time.

All of us could have more of what we desire in life, if only we fight for it. There is no limit but the limits we place on ourselves.  If we need to lose weight then get involved in an Exercise & Physical Fitness Program.  Perhaps you've just purchased property and now need some Home Improvements or you're looking for a good Financial Planner to secure your future. As Augustus changed the hands of time so can you.

Leap years are also marked as a time for women to propose to men.  So ladies get ready to plan your ideal wedding for that special occasion and take your mother, sisters or your best friends with you to find your beautiful gown at your local Bridal Shops.  One theory is that this custom dates back to the 5th Century, when, legend has it, an Irish nun called St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose.  St Patrick then supposedly gave women the chance to ask the question every four years.  The tradition is not thought to have become commonplace until the 19th Century.

In Denmark, if a man turns down a proposal they must give the woman 12 pairs of gloves and in Finland the penalty is fabric for a skirt.

The city of Anthony which straddles Texas and New Mexico in the US, is the self-proclaimed Leap Year Capital of the World.  A four-day leap year festival is held there each leap year that includes a huge birthday party for all leap year babies.  This is a great time to call your local Tourist & Sightseeing Information agents and your Party Planning & Event Consultants so you can have a memorable event in the next 4 years.  Don't forget to stop by your local Wineries to buy your favorite bottle for the upcoming festivities in the year 2020.

We keep learning new things everyday and the main thing is that your future have the opportunity to change.  How sure are you that August has 31 days and February only 28 except for leap year, 29? Whatever changes you want to make then it's up to you to go after your dreams, make the necessary changes needed today no matter how big or small they may be.  If you want new Window Coverings for your home or your Septic Tanks & Systems needs replacing or you just want to get more involved in your Community Organizations then just open up your yellow pages and make that call.

You too can claim an extra day by leaping into your New Year, by taking the time to make the change.

A Valentine’s Day to Remember

by admin 4 February 2016 09:19

Valentine’s Day is approaching, and men you don’t want to get caught sneaking out first thing in the morning trying to find flowers and candy because you forgot. Luckily Valley Yellow Pages has you covered, just sit back and let us plan the perfect day for you.

Not everyone is gifted with talents in the culinary arts, but that’s ok, taking them out to a nice breakfast/brunch can be just as impressive as presenting breakfast in bed. No mimosa's for you though, you still have work to do.

After a nice relaxing meal, what better way to show you care than dropping that special someone off at a spa where they can spend the day getting pampered in a way not many of us are equipped to do, make sure they take evening wear to change into, after all you will be going to dinner, but more on that later. This, also give you plenty of time to make sure the rest of the day goes as planned. For starters, nobody wants to come home after a day of pampering to messy house, so take some time and tidy up a bit, or better yet get someone else to do it for you. Bring in a cleaning service for the day, there’s no shame in it. Besides you still have work to do, and it’s the thought that counts, right?

Your significant other is being pampered and your house is being cleaned, you can now take a few minutes to double check your dinner reservation, or make one if you like to live life on the edge and wait until the last minute.

Still have some time before the spa day is over? Nothing says you care more than NOT wearing the same sport jacket you’re worn to every “fancy” event for the last ten years. A new suit and a hair cut shows that you care enough about them to take care in how you present yourself when you’re with them.

Finally it’s time to pick them up and what better way could there be than to have a limousine waiting as they leave the spa. At this point you can now relax, the hard part is over and the perfect day has gone off without a hitch. Sit back pop the cork on a bottle of champagne and present the jewelry you painstakingly pick out…

You DID remember the jewelry, right?

Noses are getting red and presents are getting wrapped let’s get into the jingle of the holidays.
